The Biodiversity Centre, inaugurated in March 2011, is a centre of excellence in conservation and digitization of biological collections and in biodiversity research and training. It was designed according to the LEED green building standards and was built in the heart of the Montréal Botanical Garden. A large portion of the building is dedicated to housing several important collections of plants, insects and fungi. The Centre boasts cutting edge laboratories dedicated to the discovery and preservation of the natural heritage of Quebec, Canada and the world.
The Montréal Botanical Garden is ranked as one of the world’s largest and most spectacular botanical gardens with its collection of 22,000 plant species and cultivars, 10 exhibition greenhouses, some thirty thematic gardens such as the delightful Chinese Garden, the Sonoran desert, the peaceful oasis of the Japanese Garden, the classically designed French garden and the woodlands of the Laurentians. A special exhibition on butterflies will be taking place during the International Science Symposium in April.
